COLORISM. We ain’t talkin’ Crayola crayons, either.

In “Colorism in Black and White,” my brand new MOOD SWINGS column for the venerable BALTIMOREOUTLOUD, I explore the ignominious origins and roots of colorism, an insidious form of racism/discrimination many Caucasians continue to wage against people of color–particularly African-Americans. Born during the advent of slavery, colorism is the practice of using the differences in complexions to pit one group of oppressed people of color against another–a strategy of “divide and conquer.” It was an effective “skin tone scheme” that the slaves had to adopt in order to survive.
